feel the yarn 2014, Pitti Filati, Florence

In July 2014 I was able to participate in the annual competition feel the yarn at the pitti filati in Florence. Together with other students from all over the world I presented my garments to a jury and displayed at the convention.

My inspiration is a lone female wolf fighting for her survival in the wilderness.

In my knitwear collection, the wolf’s strength is reinterpreted as that of independent contemporary woman. Knitted ‘armour’ signifies today’s female warrior. Its ability to protect its wearer is evocative of the protective layer a wolf needs to battle freezing conditions.

The rugged landscape is a reminder of the extreme weather that has shaped it. Likewise, the chain mail structure of the yarn brings to mind the generations of female warriors who have won battles for their rights. Mother Nature’s delicate shades reveal a gentle warmth beneath the warrior’s exterior.

Special thanks to New Mill and Fashion Mill for allowing me to use their yarns for my garments.

A long time ago something existed that was not defined by name or known in its form. It blocked the sky and the earth.
Living Architecture: India by Andreas Volwahsen (1971)

Volwahsen’s book has inspired my prints. When I saw his black and white photographs of Hindu temples, they reminded me of a fabric I had chosen from the Weisbrod Archive.

After selecting and painting architectural details from the book, I then translated these fragments into sculptural montages through repeated juxtaposition and layering.

The monotone prints have a timeless quality that goes beyond the photographs that inspired them to evoke an India that is both contemporary and ancient, both solid and dissolving.

They are intended for a menswear collection of short sleeve shirts.
